My favorites are probably “The Last Journey Home,” “Reasons to Live” and the inimitable classic “My Spirit Will Go On,” which is pretty much their best track ever. But the hooks are ironclad and will stick with you for days, and the songs truly are really enjoyable from time to time.

These songs are played well and are still fast, fun and furious. It’s not as overproduced as their last two studio albums by miles, and ZP’s voice is usually left alone, leaving a much rawer emotive quality than the studio albums usually have, vocal inconsistencies and all, and I like that. What happened? I think this is how they think they always sound live, more than anything like the microphone was inside Herman Li’s over-ego-infatuated head instead of outside at the show.īut aside from that, this really is a great sounding record, with lush guitars, melodious keys and soaring vocals. I have to laugh even thinking about the creative process that went into making this. Marketing it as a live album is almost false advertising altogether. It’s practically a Best Of compilation, for fuck’s sake. I put that last bit in quotes because this doesn’t even sound live, with the whole thing pro-tooled to oblivion and the crowd almost muted out entirely. This is Twilight Dementia, the, uh, “live album.” But Dragonforce are basically the metal equivalent of eating candy – too much and you feel fat and lazy, but damn is it good in small doses. You know how you can just sit there and eat candy all afternoon when you’re not paying attention, and then you feel guilty about it afterwards because you’re bloated as hell? It’s a real big tradeoff, and one that many people won’t be willing to undertake. Reaching Into Infinity is released on the 19th of May through earMUSIC.This album is a lot like candy, in a lot of ways. For everyone else, if you aren’t already onboard with Dragonforce, now may be the time to re-evaluate that. Its big, its loud and it doesn’t take itself seriously, but it will definitely get you pumped up.

Lightspeed guitar work, a full widescreen production job, Powerful vocals with hooks that make you feel like you could punch the heart out of an actual dragon. Reaching into Infinity is exactly what fans want from a Dragonforce album. It is one of the highlights on an album that features many. It’s gloriously over the top, heavy and just goes for broke.

‘The Edge of the World’ is an 11 plus minute epic that throws in everything and the kitchen sink. ‘Midnight Madness’ sounds like the end of level boss music in a video game from hell. ‘Silence’ is a massive sweeping cinematic sounding power ballad of the highest order. ‘Astral Empire’ sounds like an Iron Maiden song written by ADHD sufferers whose sole diet is Skittles & Red Bull. There are some real varied moments on here, as it each song is something different to the one before. That completely threw me for a loop the first time I heard it. Take a track like ‘Judgement Day’, which features a full-on Dream Theater type synth and guitar freak out slap bang in the middle of it. It’s heavier in places and there is extra stomp that has a real thrash element to it. Here things seem to have been paced a little more evenly. Whereas before everything was played at warp speed and featured more noodling than a Chinese takeout. There seems to be a renewed focus on songwriting that was somewhat lacking before, dare I even say a newfound maturity? Either way, this isn’t the album I was expecting. Now, I’m not sure if my tastes have changed or if Dragonforce has exercised some restraint here. This is not the case with Dragonforce who show that they still have some tricks up their sleeves. It’s usually at this stage in a band’s career when they start running out of ideas. Reaching into Infinity is Dragonforce’s seventh studio album. I will admit though that I was genuinely excited to hear them with a fresh ear after all this time. I haven’t listened to a Dragonforce album since Inhuman Rampage. So I haven’t anything they have done in over a decade and certainly nothing with current vocalist Marc Hudson. Overall Score: 8/10 Memorable Hooks: 8/10 Big Riffss: 8/10 Shows off some new ideas: 9/10 Pros: A more structured and in places restrained album Cons: Some of the solos go on a little longįor the sake of full disclosure.
